Sichuan wontons with sweet chili sauce

Updated: Dec 3, 2020

Wontons can be enjoyed in many many ways - the recipe follows Jiangze Cuisine, our Wantons are boiled and served with light sauce which makes it extra healthy.

Ingredients

  • Wonton wrapper (I used store bought wheat wrapper)

For Filling

  • 1-2 tbsp sesame oil

  • 1 block firm tofu, pressed and crumbled

  • 1/2 stick leek, finely chopped(only white and green parts)

  • 1 carrot, grated

  • 1 cup napa cabbage, finely chopped

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

  • salt and pepper to taste

For chilli sauce

  • 1/3 cup sweet chilli sauce

  • 1 tbsp sesame oil

  • 1 tbsp lime juice

Garnish

  • 1 tbsp roasted sesame seeds

  • 2 tbsp spring onions, finely sliced

Method

For Filling

  • Heat the sesame oil in a pan over a medium-high heat.

  • sauté the tofu and leeks for about 3-4 minutes until they are slightly browned.

  • Now add the carrots and napa cabbage, saute for 3 minutes , until the vegetables are tender.

  • Finally add soy sauce, vinegar, salt and pepper and cook for a minute

  • set aside to cool

How to fold wontons

  • Place 1-2 tablespoon of filling in the middle of each wonton wrapper. Moist the outer edges with some water(as shown in the pic) then fold one corner diagonally over the filling, and press the edges together firmly to seal

  • Now fold the longer outer corners towards the middle so one overlaps the other. Using some water press them firmly to seal.

  • Repeat this process for other wrappers.

To cook Wontons

  • Bring a water to a boil in a pot , then add the wontons . Remember not to overcrowd the pot.

  • Let it cook for 3-4 minutes in a low heat until they float or look transparent.

  • Remove them with a spoon, drain and place it in a bowl.(If you want you can deep fry the wontons)

  • For chilli sauce mix all the ingredients listed under sauce.

  • Pour the sauce over the wontons , sprinkle with sesame seeds and spring onions and enjoy!
